Habitat

Lizards thrive in deserts, swamps, woods, and rain forests. Some, like marine iguanas (ih-GWAH-nuhz), spend much of their life in water. Many live high in treetops or in burrows.

Lizards brumate during cold weather. Desert lizards such as ground geckos and horned lizards sleep under the sand during the heat of the day. They hunt at night, when it’s cooler.

Skin

Some lizards, such as chameleons, can change their skin color. They turn green, pink, blue, and yellow. They may do this for protection from predators, but it is more often from fright or changes in temperature.
